About thirty years back, a child was a born voyager, rambunctious, or was said to have been gifted with great creativity or brainpower, if he seemed to be lacking concentration, and was impatient, and impulsive. These children, due to their lack in concentration at school, were often jumped ahead, since it was thought that the work was not testing enough to match their capabilities.

However, now when a child shows these symptoms, they are generally diagnosed with ADD, i.e, Attention Deficit Disorder, and are treated as soon as possible.

ADD is quite a new discovery, and is most commonly found among elementary school boys. A typical young boy would be seen to act on impulse, have too much energy, be restless, and having a problem with concentrating in the class. Moreover, these kids usually tend to spend 40-plus hours a week, in front of the television, or playing video games. It cannot be denied that many children do have a lot of vigor.

This distracted behavior can be caused in children due to various reasons. In some cases, these factors might be quite serious, and might not have anything to do with the psychology of the child, or the child’s fitness conditions. For example, the behavior usually observed in children, suffering from ADD, may be caused due to problems of child abuse or due to neglect. Usually, once a child is diagnosed with ADD, a drug like Ritalin is prescribed, and the child abuse is continued without interference.

The ADD symptoms may signify some severe psychological problems, such as the bipolar disorder, deep anxiety or depression or even defects in brain. However, in some cases, the causal factors maybe quite simple, like an allergy, sensitiveness to the environment, deficiency of nutrition, or excessive caffeine intake.

Therefore, the child’s parents and teachers, along with their doctors must treat ADD as a serious issue, which should be treated with not only medication but also proper investigation.

How Is Attention Deficit Disorder Diagnosed

Assessing whether a certain individual is suffering from Attention Deficit Disorder or not is far harder than it appears to laymen like ourselves. This is because, not only does it’s symptoms largely overlap those of hyperthyroidism etc. they are also largely exhibited by ‘normal’ human beings some time or the other every single day. Of course doctors have in the past tried MRI (or magnetic resonance imagery) to analyze their patient’s brains in order to detect any possible signs of ADD, but most medical practitioners do not recommend this any more. Thus diagnosis is now primarily based on the reports of those close to the patient, who see, talk, work or live with him/her everyday and have thereby come to know the patients habits closely. A number of people suffering from ADD also realize their problem with time, especially as they grow older and consult doctors regarding it.

The guideline provided by the American Academy of pediatrics requires medical personnel to look into the child’s behavior in more than one place before reaching a conclusion regarding whether or not the child is suffering from ADD. Thus the doctor is expected to consult various ‘witnesses’ regarding the behavior of his patient in say his school, his home, at the playground, at his Grandma’s place etc. and thereby ensure that his diagnosis is not based on the child’s behavior at a certain specific place. This is to know for sure that the problem in hand is intrinsic and is consistent everywhere and not specifically due to some factors at a particular place. The guideline also requires the physician to use an “explicit criteria for the diagnosis using the DS-IV-TR”.

When approaching a doctor for cure therefore make sure that he/she follows these directions set by the Academy closely before diagnosing the problem. Remember a problem such as ADD might not be as difficult to cure as to diagnose, in fact proper diagnosis might be the first step towards a satisfactory cure.

Attention Deficit Disorder – The Signs And Symptoms

Diagnosis is difficult in cases of ADD because signs vary from child to child. The symptoms of the disorder may or may not be obvious.

First of all you must be clear that just because your child is hyperactive, he is not suffering from ADD. It is true that more than normal activities are a sign of ADD but not always so.
But, at the same time impulsive behavior, or less than normal attention, or more than normal distraction is a sign of ADD.

Actually, distraction and lack of attention go together. An ADD suffering child will not be able to stick to his work and will not pay much attention to details and may not complete his work. Although most children are like this but those who suffer from ADD show more extremes of this behavior can go on for more than 6 months. Thus his daily work is affected.

Kids having ADD are impulsive too. They may suddenly run away from their desks to see what is happening in the other part of the room. They may even give out answers in the class even if they are not asked. His behavior may be impulsive to such extremes. It is a common trait in all ADD affected children.

These kids attach themselves to everything that is happening. They may become hypersensitive and may not be able to concentrate on anything in particular. Hence their grades are lower than usual even if they don’t really have difficulties in learning anything because they don’t complete their tasks. Their attention span is so short that they are incapable of completing the work allotted to them.

There is difference in behavior among the two sexes also. Boys are more active and girls are less attentive in the class. It is difficult to manage both of them and both may be unruly in behavior or aggressive and may be even abusive. Thus it becomes very difficult to control them.

But all kids differ from each other. You will never find two similar kids. Only because your child is more aggressive than others don’t jump to the conclusion that he has ADD. Only a physician or a specialist can diagonise ADD.

ADD – how does it affect your child’s schooling and education

It is a difficult task ahead to teach a child with Attention Deficit Disorder. Many schools have identified the problem and addressed the issue because substantial developments have been made to recognize the problem. But still there are some schools that lag behind in their systematic arrangements and cannot always answer individual needs.

The way ADD influences a classroom has been seen even before any diagnosis is done. It may be observed in the boy following boisterously his classmates to snatch their books, or in the small girl sitting in the corner and playing with her hair, her mind on the outside view. It is usually the teacher who first recognizes that her student is having problem attending to the class or active more than what is acceptable. But identifying the problem is just merely the first step, and the most difficult part is changing the inattentive or hyperactive attitude.

The treatment of the disorder starts when everyone acknowledges it and a diagnosis is has been carried out. It is important to decide whether medicine is required, since that would determine the course of the treatment. There are a number of schools, which quite inhumanly emphasize that the child suffering from ADD be given medicines. Some schools, though, take a patient stance and comply with the wishes of the child’s parents’.

Whether your child is better able to cope with the situation will be determined by the kind of school he is in. In an ideal situation, your child should attend a school that understands the effectiveness of working together as a team by taking stock of your circumstances and respecting your decisions, to lead your child to the achieve the best that he or she could do. Regrettably some schools lack this open-minded vision. Communities that are small and places that are poor compared to other districts have this habit of being too much conservative and are not open to cater to children who have special needs or specific situations. If your child is admitted to a school of the first kind, then you can relax happily, but if it is of the latter type, then be warned that you will have quite a handful of issues to reckon with!

ADD makes children hard to instruct, they are generally chaotic and very difficult to control. For these reasons many school refuse to accommodate such unruly children. Nonetheless, you make sure that your child is not given secondary treatment under any circumstances.

There are certain schools who will very promptly strive to put the child with the disorder in corrective classes, even if the child’s level of intelligence does not allow that measure. In many cases, this step is taken not to take away the time of the class schedule and disturb the other kids, but you will surely not like your child to be compartmentalized in a bad light that has no foundation.

Remember finally that you are the child’s parents and should be there always for him or her. If any decision taken by the class teacher or principal goes against the well-being of your child, you should always discuss it with them and come to a better plan that would ensure the best for your child.
